Night leaves traces of winter

The Mahinerangi Wind Farm near Lake Mahinerangi has a dusting of snow yesterday after a night of snow across parts of Otago and Northern Southland.

There was also snow on the hills around Dunedin yesterday morning and a frost today.

MetService meteorologist Andrew James said the snow was being brought to the southern regions by a standard cold southerly air mass which would travel up the country later today.

The snow would be accompanied by showers and possibly hail and thunderstorms, he said.

Forecasts predicted cool weather might stay for a while.
