A 20-year-old Oamaru man has been arrested following the armed robbery of the Kakanui Store, police say.

Detective Sergeant Hannah Booth confirmed the man was found at an Oamaru property about 12.30pm today and charged with aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Several officers swarmed on the Kakanui Store, which also houses a liquor outlet, in High St about 2.55pm yesterday after it was reported a man went in brandishing a firearm and threatened staff.

The man was set to appear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow.

Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the robbery, Det Sgt Booth said.
