Bidding for Munro piston tops $5000

Bidding for a piston from Burt Munro's world's fastest Indian had reached $5150 by late yesterday in an internet auction organised by the Munro family to raise money for Christchurch earthquake relief.

Bidding slowed after an initial flurry when it went on sale last week, but is expected to pick up again before closing tomorrow evening.

The auction is timed to close 5.30pm, but could autoextend.

The hand-cast and turned piston was made by Mr Munro for the streamlined Indian motorcycle which set a world record of 295.453kmh on the Bonneville salt flats in 1967.

The piston sat on a shelf, along with hundreds of other motorcycle parts and pieces of Mr Munro's, as "offerings to the God of Speed".

Mr Munro's family decided to auction the piston on the internet to raise funds for earthquake relief, initially expecting it to make only a few hundred dollars.
