David Wilson, of the Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club, said the club had been planning to recreate the photograph for several years and decided to do so this year as part of the 2018 Victorian heritage celebrations photo reproduction competition.

The club will hold its national penny farthing and heritage cycle championships at this year's celebrations, which run from November 14 to 18.
