Council to offer ideas on direction of CCOs

The Waitaki District Council will have the opportunity today to make suggestions about the future direction of its four council-controlled organisations (CCOs).

The council's finance, audit and risk committee can review the nature and scope of the activities, objectives, shareholder expectations and reporting, as well as performance targets and governance, of Whitestone Contracting Ltd, Omarama Airfield Ltd, Waitaki District Health Services and Tourism Waitaki.

While Omarama Airfield had proposed no changes to its statement of intent, Whitestone Contracting had proposed changes ``primarily around the requirement to follow council's tendering policy'', council documents said.

And Waitaki District Health Services and Tourism Waitaki - both of which have undergone recent changes to top-tier management - were still considering their respective statements.

Former Oamaru Hospital chief executive Robert Gonzales stepped down suddenly last month.

His position is yet to be filled.

And in mid-March, Margaret Munro took on the role of general manager of Tourism Waitaki.

Recently, the tourism body came under criticism when it pulled support from the Fire and Steam event only four weeks before the NZ Steampunk Festival at Queen's Birthday weekend.

At the time, Mrs Munro said Tourism Waitaki needed to have ``a greater discussion with council about how they want to see events going forward''.
