Crews attend grass fire

Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews battled a grass fire in the Waitaki Valley on Tuesday.

Fire crews from Omarama and Otematata were first called to the scene in Omarama-Otematata Rd at 10am, where a 100sqm grass fire was burning.

A Fenz spokesman said the fire was extinguished and crews left shortly after.

However, Otematata crew were called back at 4pm to attend underground roots that were still smoking.

It was unclear how the fire started but it was not being treated as suspicious.
