Driver in 7km chase charged

A disqualified driver is facing charges after leading police on a 7km pursuit near Oamaru on Wednesday.

Constable Dean Paterson, of Oamaru, said the pursuit began about 1.30pm when the 21-year-old Waimate woman failed to stop for police on Parsons Rd, at the back of Weston.

The disqualified driver allegedly sped along Parsons Rd, on to Homestead Rd then on to Devils Bridge Rd where police called off the pursuit.

Const Paterson said the call to stop the pursuit was made by a police central communications centre and the identity of the driver became known.

She was a disqualified driver, Const Paterson said.

The car was found a short time later and the driver a short distance from the car.

He believed the pursuit posed minimal risk to other members of the public given the isolation of the country roads.

The woman will appear in the Oamaru District Court on September 6 charged with failing to stop for police.
