Enviroschools and programme leader named

The Waitaki District Council has named the district's Enviroschools leader and the 12 schools selected for inclusion in the sustainability in schools programme.

Bron Claridge will lead the programme.

The district became the last in Otago to fund the nationwide programme when the council stumped up $25,000 from its waste minimisation reserve last year.

The funding would allow 12 schools to take part, Otago Enviroschools co-ordinator Robyn Zink said in January, but the programme was oversubscribed and schools were asked to submit an expression of interest.

A statement from the council yesterday called the selection process "very difficult" and noted selection was based on criteria which included having the early childhood sector, intermediate and secondary schools represented, as well as schools from across the Waitaki district.

The selected schools are: Maheno Kindergarten, Fenwick, Papakaio, Totara, Oamaru Intermediate, Maheno, Macraes Moonlight, Flag Swamp, Weston, and St Joseph's Oamaru schools and Waitaki Girls' High School, and ABC Oamaru.

"Mrs Claridge will work with schools to identify sustainability issues relevant to them and their community and action they can take on those issues. She will also support schools to integrate sustainability into the curriculum and across all school practices," the statement said.
