Guilty plea over fatal crash

A former North Otago star rugby player charged in a fatal crash in Hakataramea Valley Rd, near Kurow, in May last year has pleaded guilty to all charges.

Regan Edward Laughton, a driver, of Hakataramea, admitted four counts of driving while under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing death when he appeared in the Timaru District Court today.

In November last year, Laughton pleaded not guilty to the charges, but changed his pleas today.

Judge David Saunders remanded the 40-year-old on bail to appear at the Timaru court for sentencing on December 6.

Laughton was charged with being the driver of the 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser that crashed about 12.15am on May 10 last year, causing the death of 23-year-old Jarrad Ethan Blackler and injuries to Ashley Maree Boardman, Timothy Michael Anderson, Simon Matthew Bertenshaw and Robert Alexander Courtnell.
