In the build-up to the 2014 transportation-themed Victorian Heritage Celebrations, a jigger racing competition was held in Oamaru yesterday afternoon.

The Tourism Waitaki team, made up of Chontelle Watson (back left), Kelly Currie (back right) and Metka Conlan, had the fastest time, crossing the line in 32 seconds.

They are pictured with Oamaru Steam and Rail Society member Brian Schou.

Four teams of three battled it out, pushing and pulling a hand-operated railway car along a 50m stretch of the historic railway in turns.

Tourism Waitaki marketing manager Ian Elliott said yesterday's event was a trial but, because it was a success, it will be incorporated into next year's OVHC programme.

The jigger, and a mandatory brake operator, were provided by the Oamaru Steam and Rail Society Inc.

The Victorian Heritage Celebrations will take place in Oamaru from November 12 to 16.
