Community newspapers teach you about a place and its people and that is why, despite ongoing challenges, they are as important to a well-functioning society as ever.
Newspapers, ideally, should be at the heart of local life, something which I believe is the case for the Oamaru Mail and one of the reasons I was interested in joining the publication in the first place.
The Oamaru Mail needs to stay connected its close-knit community and I hope I can play a part in that as its new bureau chief.
We rely on the community to function, so please do keep keeping us informed and we will do what we can to speak up and be your voice in the region.
A little CV info about me... I hail from Wales but lost the accent somewhere along the way — and the less said about the recent rugby results the better. After stints reporting and editing in local newsrooms across the British Isles, most recently in Jersey and before that in Shetland, I decided to move on to bigger and better islands, ultimately making the move to New Zealand. I’ve been told I picked a good summer for it.
Funnily enough, the place I stayed in when I first arrived in Jersey was called the Ommaroo Hotel, believed to be a New Zealand namesake with a few spelling mistakes. Little did I know that I would end up moving to the real thing five years later. But here I am.
