Kiwis slay rugby rivals

A flayed frog and a skewered Springbok. Will a walloped Wallaby come next?

The giant Richie McCaw billboard at Kurow (right) has been joined by a couple of rather visceral images after the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup victories over France in the quarterfinals and South Africa in the semis.

They are the work of Justin and Janina Slee, who have produced characters from hay bales on the same spot in recent summers.

Mrs Slee said they had something in mind, possibly involving a mangled marsupial, for the aftermath of Sunday's final.

The kiwi with a 7 is for Kurow's favourite son, Richie McCaw, and 15 is for Highlanders star Ben Smith.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
