Man charged with offences against child

A 38-year-old North Otago man has appeared in the Oamaru District Court, facing two charges of indecent assault on a child.

The man, who has been granted interim name suppression, entered no plea to the charges when he appeared on Wednesday.

It was alleged that he performed an indecent act on a child, then aged 8 or 9, in a bed at Moeraki between July 2017 and January 2018.

The second charge related to a separate incident, with the same victim, then aged between 9 and 11, in a spa bath, between January and September 2018, at Hampden.

The family of the victim was present in court while the defendant stood subdued in the dock.

Judge Joanna Maze said although the defendant had the benefit of interim name suppression, the court would require proof that it was necessary in order for it to be continued.

The man was remanded on bail for a case review hearing, on January 27 next year.
