An Oamaru man who punched another man in the foyer of the Oamaru Police Station, and had previously been involved in a separate incident at the North Otago Golf Club, has been sentenced.

Bailee Andrew James Hawtin (22) appeared in the Oamaru District Court this week for sentencing on charges of common assault, unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle and an amended charge of attempted theft.

The court heard that at about 1pm on August 6 Hawtin entered the police station and confronted another man who was sitting in the foyer waiting to speak to police.

The pair argued about money the victim owed Hawtin, before the defendant punched him in the face which caused him to stumble backwards.

Hawtin left the police station after the assault, but was promptly arrested outside the building.

He was sentenced to 80 hours' community work.

The prior incident at the North Otago Golf Club took place on July 6.

About 11pm Hawtin and an associate entered the golf club on foot and attempted to hotwire a golf cart parked underneath a veranda before they attempted to break in to a green fees box, damaging a security flap in the process.

After returning to the vehicle, Hawtin and his associate rammed the locked gates of the club open with it and drove into the property, then on to the golf course itself.

Hawtin was a passenger in the vehicle as it took an almost 30-minute joyride around the course, doing burnouts and running over signs and green flags.

Significant damage was caused to fairways and greens on at least half of the course's 18 holes.

A tin shelter was also destroyed when the vehicle ploughed into it.

When spoken to by police, Hawtin said he and his associate were "bored" and wanted something to do.

When sentencing Hawtin, Judge Allan Roberts said his actions and those of his associate were deplorable.

"What caused you and the other wastrel ... to cause this damage beggars belief."

Hawtin was sentenced to nine months' supervision and 40 hours' community work (concurrent) on the attempted theft charge and nine months' supervision on the unlawful interference charge.
