Santa’s little helpers made quick work of setting up Oamaru’s Christmas tree yesterday.

The tree, in front of the Waitaki District Council building, had some extra cheer this year as a star was added to the top.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said that given the prolonged effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on events and businesses, the district’s Christmas trees were more important than ever.

"With just how long things have been going on for and with so many events cancelled, to still be able to have trees up is a pretty awesome thing.

"The overwhelming response has been so positive. People are enjoying seeing a bit of Christmas cheer," Mr Kircher said.

The lighting of Oamaru’s tree planned for Friday had been cancelled, however, tonight, the council would livestream a lighting of the Christmas tree on its Facebook page at 9pm.

Up the Waitaki Valley, Kurow’s tree was put up on Monday and Palmerston’s tree is scheduled to be put up today.
