Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said police had spoken to a "good Samaritan" driving a red utility vehicle who had helped the woman, administering first aid and helping her home.
But the search for the alleged assailant continued, Sgt Wilkinson said.
The woman, in her 70s, suffered abrasions to her chin and bruised hands in the incident, which happened about 2.45pm.
Sgt Wilkinson said the circumstances surrounding the incident remained murky, and it was unclear whether it was an intentional assault.
