Permanent liquor ban may be on way

A temporary liquor ban at Otematata to stop trouble during holiday periods could become permanent if it is successful, Cr Struan Munro told the Waitaki District Council yesterday.

The council has voted to impose the ban at Labour Weekend, Christmas (from December 26 to January 2) and Easter.

Cr Munro said a community meeting supported the ban after the success of a similar ban at Omarama last Christmas holidays.

The ban covered much of the town and included the golf course and Otematata boat harbour.

However, the golf club will not be affected because it is privately owned, while the boat harbour is not excluded.

Entrance sign: Approval was given for a new entrance sign at Oamaru's northern approach, similar to the one erected about 10 years ago at the southern entrance.

The council has allocated $40,000 for the project, although Cr Jim Hopkins continued to question whether the Oamaru stone sculpture at the southern entrance should be repeated at the north.

Museum moratorium:

A moratorium, which will be reviewed in December next year, has been placed on adding all but "exceptional community objects and archives" to the North Otago Museum and Archives.

It comes because the museum has run out of space to accept any new items, threatening the safety of its collections.
