Waitaki residents will next week gather for a public discussion on government proposals aimed at protecting vulnerable children.
Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean will speak to professionals, families and all interested people on the recently released Government White Paper for Vulnerable Children at a public discussion in Oamaru on Wednesday.
Mrs Dean said the white paper contained 30 new initiatives, including better screening and training for people who work with children and tougher restrictions surrounding convicted abusers and more stringent child protection orders.
She said the meeting, which would be held at the Foundation for the Blind Hall, Steward St, at 1pm, was open to the whole community.
"Communities can work together to make a real difference. I've been really impressed with the input our own has already made with their suggestions for improvements to the way we work with children."
