Hampden youths are working with the Waihemo Community Board and the Waitaki District Council to provide a skateboard area in Hampden.

The youths ran 16 stalls at the Hampden market yesterday and raised about $770 towards the construction of the Hampden skateboarding halfpipe and possible extensions.

The skateboarding halfpipe will be built on council land near Hampden beach.

Four Hampden youngsters, Robbie Ley, Josh Williams, Shannon Wilson and Jeffrey Ley, have already taken models of their proposed skateboarding halfpipe and possible extensions to the Waihemo Community Board meeting at Palmerston in July.

The cost estimates were between $4000 and $5500 for the halfpipe and about $7000 for the extension, Robbie Ley (15) said recently. The council had already set aside $10,000 to be shared between Hampden, Palmerston and Kurow for skateboarding areas, community board member Ken Wheeler said recently.

The Hampden youngsters and their families are planning a "fun day" to be held in the September school holidays.

It was hoped construction of the Hampden skateboarding area could start in November, Mr Wheeler said.
