Skateboarders show initiative with plans

Young Hampden skateboarding enthusiasts have taken practical steps to gain a skateboarding area for Hampden.

They took plans, costs estimates and proposals for more fund-raising to the Waihemo Community Board, where they got a good reception.

Four Hampden youngsters prepared models of their proposed skateboarding area, to be situated on Waitaki District Council land near the Hampden beach.

The Hampden teenagers took the models of the skateboarding half pipe and extension skateboarding area to the public forum of the Waihemo Community Board on July 21. The cost estimates were between $4000 and $5500 for the half pipe and about $7000 for the extension, skateboarder Robbie Ley (15) said.

Fund-raising had been undertaken by running stalls at the Hampden market, he said, and there would be more.

The Hampden skateboarding park would be popular with youngsters staying at the nearby Hampden Beach Holiday park, he said.

A petition had been signed by 300 people in Hampden supporting the development of a skateboarding area in the town.

The Waitaki District Council has put aside $10,000 to be made available for skateboarding areas in Palmerston, Kurow and Hampden.

It was hoped that construction of the skateboarding area could begin in November once Waitaki District Council Rural Parks officer Mrs Jane Matchett has checked the title of the land.
