There is a party at the Athenaeum

Oamaru residents are being invited to a historic Victorian building's 130th birthday party on Friday.

The 1882 Athenaeum building on Thames St, which houses the North Otago Museum and previously the Waitaki District Library, turns 130 on Friday.

Museum exhibitions and collections curator Chloe Searle said the building was designed by Forrester and Lemon, and Thomas Forrester was the Oamaru Museum's first curator.

The celebration would include an informal afternoon tea and a chance for people to chat and reminisce.

The birthday party would start at 4pm on Friday in the museum building, she said.
