State Highway 1 south of Oamaru has fully reopened after a truck that was rear-ended spilled a load of grain near Herbert this morning.

Motorists encountered delays between Waianakarua and Herbert as contractors worked to clear the road after the early morning crash.

A truck and trailer unit rear-ended another truck carrying oats on passing lanes on the highway north of the Mill House just before 5am.

The southbound lane remained closed for much of the morning as contractors worked to clear the oats and vehicles from the roads, but it is now clear.

Earlier, motorists had to negotiate a thick layer of grain on the highway as well as the two trucks.

There were no injuries.
