A would-be burglar was stopped in their tracks last night in Herbert, following a recent spate of suspicious activity in the area.
Over several nights residents of the small rural town in North Otago have reported disturbances on their properties.
Sergeant Blair Wilkinson said on Wednesday night a person had been disturbed in what was believed to have been an attempted burglary.
"We have recently had several calls over the last few nights. We’d encourage people in the Herbert area, if they have any disturbances overnight or any suspicious activity, to phone 111 immediately."
The settlement is about 20km southwest of Oamaru.
A chainsaw was reported missing from a Herbert property on Monday.
Another resident reported a person on their land, who was chased away by farm dogs about 2.30am on Tuesday.
Sgt Wilkinson said the police were particularly interested in any sightings of a red Toyota Estima people mover.
