An Auckland-based company is seeking consent to build a $25 million hotel at Remarkables Park in Queenstown.

Safari Group has lodged a consent application with Queenstown Lakes District Council for a 48-room, six apartment Ramada Hotel adjacent to the planned convention centre.

The group plans to start building before Christmas on the four-level, 5000sqm hotel opposite the new Wakatipu High School.

Safari Group owner Robert Neil said the hotel would fill 80 percent of the development, mostly levels two and three, with the hotel cafe/restaurant and reception area on the ground floor.

A key tenant had been secured for the café and the complex would also include eight boutique retail stores.

Up to 50 jobs would be created during the construction phase, and more than 20 once the hotel opened, he said.

The company hoped to open by Christmas next year.

Mr Neil said Remarkables Park's proposed multimillion-dollar convention centre had been a "major motivator" for the hotel development.

"That's certainly one of the main reasons behind our decision, but it's not the only one," he said. "The economic development and growth of the wider Frankton Flats area is also a big drawcard.

Remarkables Park last month lodged a resource consent application to build a the convention centre, providing for up to 900 delegates.
