Airport takes a quiet approach

There has been a quiet revolution taking place at Queenstown's airport.

Tucked away in a corner of the terminal's administration wing a new sign has appeared bearing the Queenstown Airport Corporation's new logo and colour branding.

In fact, the corporation is now simply called "Queenstown Airport".

While many corporations would launch into a new media campaign, the new branding was implemented in April with no fanfare.

"After 19 years, we have a new look and a new name," chief executive officer Steve Sanderson said.

Queenstown Airport commercial general manager Simon Barr said the re-branding had been carried out in April to coincide with the launch of the corporation's new-look website.

"The old logo has been around since 1992 - it looked a bit dated and so we freshened it up," he said.

The motif chosen represents the Remarkables, which form the backdrop, and some of the challenging aeronautical aspects of Wakatipu's terrain.

The green, yellow and red were a "clear departure" from the blue and silver of the old logo.

While the fresh brand has been around for a few months now, Mr Barr was not surprised most people had not noticed it.

"We have been introducing it slowly - and using up all our existing stationery to save costs," he said.

When the content of the car park signs was streamlined to make them easier to understand, the new colour scheme was used, and the signage around the airport would also be replaced "as it needs to be".

While the new signage will eventually extend through the terminal, so far there is only one small sign indoors.

In keeping with the ethos of simplicity it reads simply "Administration".
