Bar owners must wait weeks for Appeal Court verdict

A group of Queenstown bar owners challenging the Queenstown Lakes District Council's blanket 4am closing time must wait up to eight weeks for the verdict from the Court of Appeal.

My Noodle Ltd (Sky Bar), Central Otago Breweries Ltd (Harry's Pool Bar), Chuck Norris Ltd (Minibar) and Barmuda Ltd were the named appellants against the council's restriction of 24-hour trading for licensed premises at a one-day hearing in Wellington yesterday.

President of the Court of Appeal William Young, Justice Susan Glazebrook and Justice Robert Chambers heard the appeal.

Good Group Ltd chief executive Russell Gray said the panel had "gone away to consider" before it delivered its verdict in six to eight weeks.

The group's legal challenge was to the decision of the Liquor Licensing Authority to uphold the controversial liquor policy introduced by the council last year.

Mr Gray said the process yesterday allowed both parties to put their case forward.

The appellants were represented by Austin Forbes QC, of Christchurch, and the council by solicitors Richard Cunliffe and Tanya Surrey, of Queenstown.
