The Wanaka Community Board yesterday snapped up a $1 bargain - the former St John building.

Rates of about $1700 must be paid on the 36-year-old building, but these could be passed on to any future lessee, APL property manager Joanne Conroy told the board.

Wanaka Community Board chairman Lyal Cocks said the building needed some work and he would be putting it forward as a project for community service workers.

The building is no longer wanted by the Order of St John, which has been based at its Link Way ambulance station for nearly 10 years.

The Wanaka library has expressed interest in using the building as storage space.

"I imagine the librarians have got their boxes packed already," Cr Jude Battson said.
