Police are warning motorists to take care on Wakatipu roads, as heavy frosts are making roads and bridges extremely icy.
Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said an 18-year-old Cromwell man was taken to Lakes District Hospital on Sunday night after losing control of his car just past the Crown Range Rd turn-off on State Highway 6.
The teenager was heading towards Cromwell when he hit ice, lost control and hit a bank and trees, Sgt Pirovano said.
Speed and alcohol were not factors, she said.
''If these temperatures continue, bridges in particular will be treacherous.
''Be very mindful of black ice and ice on bridges.''
