Careless driving charge laid

The 60-year-old male driver of an SUV which collided with a sedan on Wednesday afternoon has been charged with careless driving causing injury to six people.

Three people, all from the sedan, were seriously injured in the accident at Gibbston near the Kawarau Bungy Centre, including a man in his 70s who was trapped in his car for more than an hour.

Constable Terry Wood, of Queenstown, said the occupants of the SUV were four Israelis, and the driver had allegedly ''drifted into the wrong lane'' after pulling out from a driveway.

Const Wood said the SUV allegedly crossed the centre line ''to quite a degree'' and the driver had a short amount of time to correct the vehicle as there was oncoming traffic.

The occupants of the sedan were New Zealanders, with two thought to be from Cromwell.

The driver is expected to appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.
