Centre connected

Wanaka is hooked up, after Chorus completed its fibre rollout in Wanaka's town centre this week.

Wanaka is not included in the Government's ultra-fast broadband initiative, but Chorus and a group of local business and community leaders, supported by Queenstown Lakes District Council, agreed to jointly fund the roll-out in the town's centre.

Chorus infrastructure general manager Ed Beattie said the new fibre network put about 200 premises within reach of fibre services.

''Businesses in the Wanaka CBD now have the chance to experience the potential economic and social benefits of a fully functioning fibre network.

'' ... we're really looking forward to seeing how the Wanaka business community can best take advantage of having world-class connectivity right on their doorstep.''

Wanaka chamber of commerce chairman Alistair King said having fibre would make a big difference.

''[It] makes Wanaka businesses as competitive as others throughout the rest of New Zealand that have access to the fibre network.''

Combined with Wanaka's attractive lifestyle, it was the perfect combination for business growth, he said.
