Chance to greet teams

Sixty Wakatipu residents will get the chance to officially welcome one of two Rugby World Cup teams to Queenstown in early September.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Vanessa van Uden said yesterday a community ballot would be held to pick the community representatives. The ballot would provide 60 chances to attend either the Irish or Georgian civic welcome - both teams will enter New Zealand through Queenstown.

The Irish civic welcome would be held on September 4 and Georgia's on September 6, both at the Skyline.

The ballot could be entered at Queenstown Lakes District Council offices on Gorge Rd, Queenstown or Ardmore St, Wanaka, with entries open throughout July and winners drawn in August.

Those who missed out would have another opportunity to welcome the teams at Queenstown Airport, with the Irish team arriving at 3.15pm on September 1 and the Georgian team at 5.25pm on September 5.
