The Fresh Choice Women's Bike Ride Tri event at Lake Hayes was won by Marion Maxwell, of Dunedin, racing in the veteran division, in the time of 1:00:21.

The premier triathlon attracted 78 individuals and 28 teams to the Lake Hayes showground on Saturday, including the Dutch national team, which completed a double length of each discipline as part of its training.

As well as the traditional duathlon and triathlon, an 8.1km run around the Lake Hayes' track was introduced for the first time, and 12 competitors took part.

The triathlon course included a 300m swim or 2km kayak on Lake Hayes, followed by a 15km bike ride on the Lake Hayes-Arrowtown road on to Speargrass Flat Rd and return, followed by a 5km run or walk on the Lake Hayes Track to the finish line at the Lake Hayes Pavilion.

The duathlon began with a 1.5km run, followed the triathlon's 15km biking leg and a 5km run to the finish line.

The Bike Run Tri, in its 19th consecutive year, attracted elite and recreational sportswomen.

Race director Geoff Hunt said there was the usual strong camaraderie among the competitors and several first-time entrants who were keen to race in the all-women environment.

Selena Metherell was first in the open swim triathlon, with Helen Seyb, of Queenstown, second, in 1:08:44, followed by Jodie Llewellyn, of Arrowtown, close behind in 1:08:52.

Up to 21 women competed in the individual open triathlon and 11 in the individual veteran triathlon, which was won by Maxwell. Helen Hanson, of Dunedin, was second in 1:15:26.

The duathlon attracted 36 individuals, split evenly between open and veteran categories. In the open section, Brit Williams won in 1:06:46. The individual veterans' duathlon was won by Maree Waring in 1:03:59, followed by Viv Buchanan in 1:04:26.

The business teams triathlon was won by Remarkables Physios, of Queenstown, in 1:13:20, while Lakes Leisure Queenstown won the coveted Dan Kelly Trophy in 1.13.40. The open triathlon teams event was won by Team Paradise in 1:16:16, and the open duathlon by Team SMS in 1:06:44.

In the newly created run section, Susan Finn, of Waterford in Ireland, in 43:47, beat veteran competitor Carole Schuttleworth who ran 45:02.

A mountain bike was won by Louise Jennis, of Queenstown.
