Footlights in Glenorchy

Glenorchy will host theatrical and musical performers of national calibre when the Festival Of Colour plays in the township for the first time next year.

Festival director Philip Tremewan said while the full programme was under wraps until February 12, "I can say there are two extraordinarily fines shows in Glenorchy".

"One is a theatrical piece and the other is a musical group who are incredibly popular on two separate nights."

The shows in the Glenorchy Hall would have "real pulling power" for Wakatipu residents and visitors alike, Mr Tremewan said.

The Glenorchy events were part of an expansion of the Wanaka-based festival, which would also see shows in Clyde for the first time in 2009.

The festival had already toured its shows to Arrowtown, Cromwell, Bannockburn, Tarras, Luggate and Hawea Flat to rave reviews and benefits for residents, holidaymakers and performers.

Glenorchy Community Association chairman Thor Davis said anything for the community was really good.

"Glenorchy is quite used to catering for large groups and has a wide range of food and accommodation available."

The Festival Of Colour is billed as a "celebration of the arts" and features stylish and fresh dance, theatre, music, visual arts and top-class speakers, plus a community street-theatre day and a programme for schools.

The biannual festival started in 2005 and the next event runs between April 28 and May 3.

The Glenorchy Hall dates are pencilled in for April 29 and May 1. More than 27 shows sold out in the festival last year.

Mr Tremewan said he advised residents to book early as "we want locals to have first choice".

Tickets go on sale on February 12 for patrons and sponsors and public sales are available from February 23. Tickets can be purchased either via the festival website, the Lake Wanaka i-SITE or Lake Wanaka Centre.
