James Woods from the United Kingdom, who won yesterday's The North Face Freeski Open of New Zealand at Cardrona Alpine Resort, shows his form.

Wanaka-based New Zealand Winter Olympian Jossi Wells had to settle for third behind a Brit and a Swiss at yesterday's men's section of the Freeski Open of New Zealand held at the Cardrona Alpine Resort.

The United Kingdom's James Woods won the event from Switzerland's Oysten Braten, while the women's section was won by 12-year-old Estonian Kelly Sildaru from Swede Emma Dahlstrom, who placed fifth at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

New Zealander Anna Wilcox was third.

Jossi Wells said he was happy to make the podium after an indifferent day.

''It wasn't the best run I've ever done. It was a great day, the course was great and it was nice to have the three-run format.''

The competition continues today at Cardrona with the men's and women's halfpipe.
