Members of a group opposed to the development of car parking on a Wanaka park are celebrating victory after a recommendation the scheme be scrapped.

The recommendation, made to the Wanaka Community Board by the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), suggested the proposal for 94 angled parking spaces on the Brownston St side of the park not go ahead.

Wanaka resident John Coe said this was the second time Wanaka's parks had been attacked by the community board in recent years.

''I hope that this time they get the message that the people of Wanaka do not want their reserves taken for car parking,'' he said.

Friends of Pembroke Park member Fr Brian Fenton said he was ''very'' pleased to hear the news, and looked forward to the recommendation being confirmed on Tuesday.

He hoped the community board decision would respect the wishes of the majority of Wanaka people.

''Hopefully, this will be the last time they have a go at the park.''

Fr Fenton said the more Wanaka grew, the more important the integrity of Pembroke park became.

He praised the QLDC for enhancing Pembroke Park over recent years. It had done a great job taking care of the park's playing fields and trees.

The pair hoped the beauty of the park would continue to grow.

The men intended to attend the Wanaka Community Board meeting next Tuesday, where the recommendation still needed to be ratified.
