The Wakatipu's developing $5 million Queenstown Trail impressed Green Party MP Kevin Hague yesterday when he took a tour around the region's newest asset.

Mr Hague (right) is pictured during the tour with Queenstown cycle race organiser Geoff Hunt and Wakatipu Trails Trust chief executive Kaye Parker.

The MP was briefed by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, the Wakatipu Trails Trust and Destination Queenstown.

The parliamentarian also got his own taste of the outdoors yesterday afternoon when he was taken on a bike ride over part of the new trail by Mr Hunt.

He said the Queenstown Trail has the added value of taking riders past historical landmarks, which will add to its value in years to come.

The MP sees the trail as a "great anchor" for visitors to the region and those coming to ride will most likely stay longer, which would help the local economy.

The 90km Queenstown Trail will link a series of tracks within the Wakatipu Basin incorporating the Gibbston wine-growing district, historic Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, Frankton and Queenstown Bay.

The planned completion date is September 2012.
