A Fijian man wearing a hat, sunglasses and a scarf in a bid to ''disguise his appearance'' allegedly tried to leave New Zealand via Queenstown Airport on a false passport on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford said the 53-year-old man had produced an Australian passport which had allegedly been dishonestly obtained.

The man, listed as a welder from Auckland on court documents, was charged with possessing an Australian passport obtained by false representation.

''He's Fijian but the name on the passport is a very Anglo European name.''

Snr Const Blackford said the man was allegedly in New Zealand illegally, after having already been deported to Fiji in the past.

He also faces an assault charge.

The man appeared in the Queenstown District Court yesterday afternoon.

He was remanded in custody and taken to Invercargill Prison.

Court documents show a charge of assault with intent to injure in relation to an incident in August last year, in which a man was punched in the head and ribs.

When the man he appeared before a registrar yesterday, he was remanded to April 28.

An Immigration New Zealand spokeswoman said it was aware of the situation and wasinvestigating.
