Mann expresses interest in licensing committee

Cr John Mann surprised the Queenstown Lakes District Council this week when he declared his interest in joining the district licensing committee, instead of standing again for local government.

Cr Mann declared his interest at the outset, then sat back from discussion, when the recommendation was tabled for a working party of council officers to short-list candidates for the committee.

The Wakatipu ward councillor is considered by many the ''finance minister'' at the council table and is serving his third term. He expressed his intention to stand again in early July.

Cr Mann said after the meeting it had not been a hasty decision, but he was ready for a new challenge. His 38 years' experience as a licensee and in hospitality and nine years as a councillor led him to believe he could help in setting up the committee, he said.

''It's been a great trip and I hope to do as well in a slightly different field in an industry I love,'' Cr Mann said.

The recommendation was adopted and Crs Trevor Tattersfield and Simon Stamers-Smith voiced their interest in the committee.

Territorial authorities must appoint a district licensing committee to deal with alcohol licensing matters for the district by December 18. The formal appointment will be made by the new council after the elections.
