Mcdonald's may build a restaurant on Frankton Rd.
In response to the construction of a Burger King restaurant and drive-through beside the BP service station at the entrance to Queenstown, rival fast food chain MacDonald's has submitted plans for a restaurant, McCafe and drive-through beside the newly rebuilt Mobil station on the corner of Frankton Rd and McBride St.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council's urban design panel has recommended changes to the proposed signage.
The panel stated the "blade" signage included in an earlier proposal be scrapped because it was "not compatible with Queenstown design expectations . . . it may be appropriate in other locales but not here".
The panel's report stated as part of the "gateway" to Queenstown, the building needed to "reflect visitor's expectations" of the resort's "character and experience".
The panel lamented the adjacent corner shopping centre, which had been developed "with mixed success", was becoming a "suburban or road-side services look rather than the desired urban entry to Queenstown".
The panel requested the company soften the "contrast between competing elements" of the design and reduce the "hard commercial look of the building".
A palette of white and grey, stone finishes including schist, and timber had been chosen for its building, "reflecting the character and experiences of Queenstown".
