Festival of Colour organisers are bringing respected New Zealand musician Don McGlashan to Luggate next month for a surprise gig.

The festival usually is held every two years, with the next instalment of the Central Otago arts event timed for April 2011.

However, McGlashan, perhaps best known from his time fronting New Zealand band the Muttonbirds, is coming to play at the Luggate Hall as part of a joint venture between the Festival of Colour and the Arts on Tour New Zealand.

McGlashan is recognised as one of New Zealand's foremost songwriters and artists with five entries in Apra New Zealand's top 100 songs of all time.

His Luggate performance will come after a sell-out show in the Wellington Festival and from a wildly popular WOMAD appearance.

McGlashan was a member of the percussion ensemble From Scratch from 1979 to 1986 and was drummer and singer with Auckland agit-punk band Blam Blam Blam from 1980 to 1982.

He was singer and main songwriter for the Mutton Birds from 1991 to 2002 and has composed numerous soundtracks for television and movies, including An Angel at my Table.

Tickets for the concert on April 24 go on sale from March 29 at the Luggate Hotel or the Festival of Colour office in Helwick St, Wanaka.
