Queenstown-based doctor and entrepreneur Sam Hazledine has been named one of six new Blake Leaders.

The founder of MedRecruit won the accolade last night at the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards in Auckland. Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae hosted the ceremony at Shed 10 in Auckland.

The highest accolade of the evening - the Blake Medal - was awarded to Sir Peter Jackson for his outstanding leadership and contribution to tourism, his Wellington community and the New Zealand and international film industry.

Dr Hazledine, originally from New Plymouth, graduated in 2003 from the University of Otago and practised emergency department medicine until he started MedRecruit in October 2006.

The company helps doctors from New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and other countries find short- and long-term medical placements.

It employs more than 30 staff and has offices in Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Hazledine was Ernst & Young Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012.
