New warning sign up

A new warning sign has been erected on a walking track near the Cromwell landslip advising of a large cavity in the slope above State Highway 8 and Lake Dunstan.

The hole is on crown land believed to be under the control of the New Zealand Transport Agency (formerly Transit), although agencies contacted yesterday were unsure who had ultimate responsibility.

The hole has been there for many years and is regularly monitored for movement by the NZTA and Clyde dam owner Contact Energy.

Contact Energy records showed it moved between 1-5mm last year, the lowest movement on record.

An older warning sign had disappeared and the Cromwell and Districts Promotions Group thought it prudent to erect a new one.

There was no concern about the hole.

The promotions group built the track, which is maintained by the Cromwell Community Board.

The walking track is a few hundred metres south of the Cromwell bridge and goes up to the site of an old reservoir.
