The owner of a ''reasonably distinctive'' piece of metal is being sought by Queenstown police.

The metal, which weighs between 3kg and 4kg, came off a truck's trailer around 12.15pm on Saturday and smashed through the windscreen of a car passing in the opposite direction on the Lower Shotover bridge on State Highway 6.

It left a hole in the windscreen - but only grazed the hand of the Cromwell driver - before embedding itself in the lining of the car's interior roof.

Yesterday, the Otago Daily Times reported the metal bar came from a truck which had turned on to the Shotover Bridge from Tucker Beach Rd.

Senior Constable Julian Cahill, of Queenstown, yesterday said the metal had tapered ends and he guessed it was steel.

''We're hoping someone would come forward,'' Snr Const Cahill said.
