Police are warning users of social media not to take matters into their own hands after an incident in Central Otago during the weekend.
Queenstown police said today it appeared a Facebook post prompted two people to go to a residential address and allegedly commit an assault.
"Users of social media are not exempt from criminal charges simply because they are acting out on-line," Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron, of Queenstown, said.
"Inciting, threatening or committing offences online is viewed seriously by police and punitive action will be taken where appropriate."
Two people have been charged in relation to the attack.
