Jono Sutherland, of Queenstown, has been appointed the Lakes district's Rugby World Cup co-ordinator and will assume the role from April 18.

The role, jointly funded by the QLDC and Destination Queenstown, will see Mr Sutherland continue the organisation of RWC 2011 initiatives in the district.

Mr Sutherland had spent the past eight years working for Lion Nathan as an events and marketing executive, beginning in Dunedin before moving to Queenstown in 2007 to perform the same role.

He said he was excited about the challenges of his new position.

"I'm looking forward to getting into it and working with everyone to maximise the benefits this international event will bring to the district."

Council chief executive Debra Lawson said the appointment was timely given the recent announcement of the funding allocations for local RWC events.

Queenstown received $85,000 from the Lottery Grants Board to help fund three events as part of the Real New Zealand Festival, which will be held during the RWC. A jazz and music festival would receive $35,000, while new events "History Alive" and "Matches Made in Heaven - Food, Wine and Art" had been granted $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.

"Planning for team hosting and local events has been under way for quite some time, and we're looking forward to Jono coming on board," Ms Lawson said.
