Skifields welcome snowfall

Snow Park services manager Sally Norman is thrilled snow-making guns are working again, as low temperatures bring relief to the Southern Lakes skifields.
Fresh snow yesterday was just what the Lakes district's skifields ordered, with Coronet Peak due to reopen today and Cardrona back on target for a Friday opening.

The operators of the Snow Farm and Snow Park, on the Pisa Range, hope to open this weekend, and the management at the Remarkables says things look promising for next week.

Coronet Peak received up to 15cm of snow yesterday, with 8cm at the base.

Snow machines have been running for the past two days.

Ski Area manager Hamish McCrostie said an icy blast over the past 24 hours had lowered temperatures enough to get the ski season running again.

"It's cold; there's more snow in the forecast, and everything is on track for further natural and man-made snow over the rest of the week," Mr McCrostie said.

NZSki chief executive James Coddington said the snow was "fantastic" with the Winter Festival set to begin on Friday.

The skifield's $30 million building will be officially opened on Saturday.

"We have a huge weekend planned, and [we're] delighted to have Mother Nature join the party with fresh snow," Mr Coddington said.

"The cold weather is also bringing the right conditions for snow-making," he said.

Cardrona Alpine Resort got 10cm-15cm of snow overnight on Monday, and the snow continued yesterday, spokesman Bruce McGeechan said.

The skifield's snow guns had been operating for the past two days, and cold temperatures and more natural snow were forecast, he said.

Remarkables ski area manager Ross Lawrence welcomed the 5cm-10cm of snow which fell yesterday, but said it was not enough to guarantee an opening day.

The field was forced to postpone its opening last Saturday.

"We would need another 30cm to be beneficial," Mr Lawrence said.

The cooler weather was good for snow-making, with the temperature sitting at -7degC throughout the day.

The field had been "snow-making flat out" over the past 24 hours.

An opening date had not been set, but it was possible the Remarkables would open over the first week of the Queenstown Winter Festival.

At Treble Cone, 5cm of fresh snow fell on Monday night. Spokesman Sam Williams said the snow-making crew had "the guns blasting all night and all day".

The Snow Park's guns had been making artificial snow since Sunday morning and continued to work around the clock, general manager Sam Lee said.

The freestyle park would open this weekend, conditions permitting.

At the nearby Snow Farm, general manager Mary Lee said the cross-country facility looked good and could open this weekend.
