Queenstown Airport authorities are keeping their fingers crossed winter hasn't come early, after a dusting of snow contributed to two days of disruption for passengers flying to and from the resort.

Air New Zealand airport manager David Whitaker, of Queenstown, said the weather, including light snow showers yesterday morning, caused delays for several flights but no cancellations.

‘‘It was a bit dodgy at one part but we managed to scrape through. We have had a few delays.''

It was a different story on Thursday, when thick, low cloud forced the cancellation of six Air New Zealand and Qantas domestic flights to and from the resort he said.

The disruption affected about 800 passengers, who were ferried between Queenstown, Christchurch and Invercargill by bus, he said.

‘‘We are just hoping winter hasn't come too soon.''

Elsewhere, the MetService warned motorists to take special care amid forecasts of snow as low as 200m in parts of Otago and Southland until early Saturday morning. A heavy snow warning was issued for near the Catlins and Hokonui Hills.
