Controversial American cyclist Lance Armstrong is understood to be holidaying in the Queenstown Lakes district with his partner Anna Hansen and 3-month old daughter Olivia.

Armstrong's Gulfstream Aerospace G-IV private jet, which is operated under the name Mellow Johnny's Aviation, is parked at Queenstown Airport.

Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner whose illustrious career has been dogged by doping allegations, which he has consistently denied, contested the 2011 Australian Tour Down Under cycling event last week.

In his last race outside of the United States, he finished 67th in Adelaide last Sunday and was to have competed in a triathlon in Rotorua today, but pulled out because of a knee injury.

The latest update on Armstrong's Twitter page, made on January 24, simply says "vacation time".

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
