Tourists arrested after bar scuffle

Police made three arrests after a scuffle involving a pair of Australian tourists at a Queenstown bar on Thursday night.

Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown, said two Australian men, aged 22 and 25, were arrested after a fight erupted on the dance floor at Winnie's, in the Mall, about midnight.

The older man had thrown several punches, Snr Const Blackford said, while the younger man hit another man and ran off, but was soon apprehended by police.

The third arrest was of a 26-year-old Auckland woman, whose brother was injured in the melee, Snr Const Blackford said.

After banging on the side of an ambulance which had been called to the scene and hurling abuse at police she was arrested, but was later released after a pre-charge warning, he said.

• Alcohol was allegedly a factor in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 at the south end of Lake Hayes at 11.55pm on Thursday.

A Christchurch driver, who claimed he swerved to avoid a small animal, lost control of his vehicle, which then hit a bank and flipped.
