At 8.05am an electrician's work van, an NZSki ute and a third car collided in Gorge Rd as the van hit black ice and slid across the road before coming to rest in a ditch.
Sergeant Tracy Haggart said drivers and passengers received minor injuries.
''Traffic was delayed slightly; the road was taken down to one lane to allow cars through.''
Less than an hour later, a delivery truck overturned at 8.45am near Atley Rd as the driver struggled to maintain control.
''A truck travelling towards Queenstown has slid on black ice, the driver has had to correct to avoid an oncoming car, which has resulted in the truck tipping over,'' Sgt Haggart said.
The driver received only a hand injury.
Roads around Arthurs Point are notorious for black ice during the winter.
''The area doesn't get a lot of sunshine so it is known for ice when we do have extreme icy conditions.''
Grit trucks were constantly busy laying gravel on roads in the area but drivers should always be wary.
''Its just the usual message,'' Sgt Haggart said.
''Just slow down when the weather is extremely cold in the morning ... drive to the conditions and expect to find ice and grit on the roads.''
